JYESTHA (MAY-JUNE)

Jyestha month falls between May and June. It is an important month for the people of Odisha for many reasons.

The sacred bathing festival of Lord Jagannath is celebrated on the full-moon day of the month of Jyestha, it is known as Snana Purnima or Deva Snana Purnima. The Holy Trinity of Jagannath Temple come out of the main temple to the Snana Mandapa (bathing platform) to receive the grandest and holiest bath to beat the heat of the Sun.

Savitri Brata is celebrated on Jyestha Amavasya tithi so it is also known as Savitri Amavasya. This festival is celebrated to remember the holy act of Savitri who rescued her husband, Satyavan, from Yama, the god of death. Married Hindu women observe fast on this day to promote long and healthy life for their husbands.

Sitala Sasthi is observed on the sixth day of the Jyestha month during the Shukla Paksha. Sitala Sasthi is celebrated as the marriage of Lord Shiva and Goddess Parvati. It is a major festival of Odia Brahmins. People observing this festival believe that Lord Shiva represents the burning heat of summer while Goddess Parvati signifies the first rain. Sital Sasthi is a celebration wherein Lord Shiva and Goddess Parvati are adopted by two families, and their wedding is celebrated with the involvement of rituals. After the marriage, the God and Goddess are then carried around the city and village via a procession.
