BHADRABA (AUGUST-SEPTEMBER)

Bhadraba month falls between August and September. Bhadraba is known for several important Hindu festivals.

Ganesh Chaturthi is celebrated for 10 days, people worship Lord Ganesha, the God of knowledge, wisdom and prosperity, and immerse his idols in water bodies at the end of the festival. It begins on the fourth day (chaturthi) of the month of Bhadraba and marks the birthday of Lord Ganesh.

Radhashtami is celebrated on the eighth day of Bhadraba month. It is an auspicious day to commemorate the birth anniversary of the Goddess Radha, the consort of the Lord Krishna. Radhashtami falls 15 days after Krishna Janmashtami.

Ananta Chaturdashi is celebrated on Bhadraba Shukla Chaturdashi, which is the fourteenth day of Bhadraba month. It is a festival dedicated to Lord Vishnu According to the Agni Purana, the Ananta (the divine serpent Shesha) manifestation of Lord Vishnu is adored on this occasion to free devotees from sins. This festival is also marked as the last day of the 10 days long Ganesh Chaturthi festival.

Vishwakarma Puja is celebrated on the last day of Bhadraba month. It is also known as 'Bhadraba Sankranti' or 'Kanya Sankranti'. The day marks the auspicious celebration of the birth of Lord Vishwakarma, the divine architect, who was the son of Lord Brahma. Vishwakarma is considered as creator of the world. A popular folklore related to Lord Vishwakarma is that he made the famous Jagannath Temple Puri idols of Lord Jagannath, Lord Balabhadra and Goddess Subhadra.
