ODIA CALENDAR

PHALGUNA (FEBRUARY-MARCH)

Phalguna month in the Hindu calendar falls between February and March. The month begins with the celebration of Magha Purnima, which marks the end of the month of Magha and the beginning of Phalguna.

Dola Purnima is celebrated on the full moon day or fifteenth day of the Phalguna month. This festival is dedicated to the divine couple Goddess Radha and Lord Krishna. The start of spring is marked by this festival and the people of Odisha celebrate it with great excitement and happiness. On Dola Purnima, Lord Jagannath, along with his siblings Balabhadra and Subhadra, are taken out in a procession known as Dola Yatra to Dola Vedi. During this procession, the idols are placed on beautifully decorated palanquin. In addition to the procession, Dola Dance is performed by the devotees in colourful traditional attire. This festival is a symbol of love, unity, and peace and is celebrated by people of Puri. During Dola Jatra in the villages of Odisha, the idol of Lord Krishna is taken from house to house on a beautifully decorated palanquin, accompanied by a procession of Sankirtan Mandali, drummers, singers, and musicians. Each household in the village offers a special offering, called Bhoga, to Lord Krishna. The people who follow the procession throw dry colours, known as Abira, as a sign of celebration.
